How to Maximise Your Learning and Make the Most of Your English Course

how to maximise your learning and make the most of your english course cover

When you don’t have much time to study or you feel that you aren’t making progress with your English, it can be difficult to motivate yourself to learn. Don’t give up! Learning English is a challenge that you can conquer. Use these simple tips to get the most from your course and your study time.

When you’re in English mode, block out all distractions

It’s always important to try and think in English, but that can be tricky if people keep interrupting you by speaking in another language. Avoid this by letting everyone know you are studying and can’t be disturbed. Even if you’re not in an online class or listening to music, wearing headphones is a good way to show people that you are concentrating on something and they will be less likely to disturb you. If you have the luxury of your own room to study in, hang a ‘Do not disturb’ sign on the door – just like you would in a hotel.

Understand what type of learner you are

Everyone learns in a different way and understanding your learning style is the key to becoming a successful learner. If you learn best by speaking, make sure you get plenty of chances to speak English. If you are a more reflective learner, take time out to read and listen to English so you can put all the language you are learning in context.

Study outside class

A teacher can teach, but only you can learn. Even the best teacher can only help you if you are prepared to fully engage with learning a language. That means you need to take the time to study and practise outside of class. This can be by doing your homework, doing your own research into topics you found tricky in class, or using self-study tools such as the EF English Live app

Motivate yourself

So now that you know how to be more productive when you are learning English, it’s time to get on with your studies. Get motivated by remembering why you are learning English and focusing on your goals.
