A prepositional phrase (preposition + object) can function as an adjective or an adverb depending on what it describes.

Prepositional Phrases as Adjectives

When a prepositional phrase describes a noun or pronoun, it acts as an adjective. It tells us which one or what kind.

  • The book on the table is mine. (Which book? The one on the table.)
  • The girl with red hair is my sister. (Which girl? The one with red hair.)
  • The house at the end of the street is for sale. (Which house?)

These phrases always come immediately after the noun they describe.

Prepositional Phrases as Adverbs

When a prepositional phrase describes a verb, it acts as an adverb. It tells us when, where, how, or why.

  • She arrived in the morning. (when)
  • He lives in New York. (where)
  • They spoke with great enthusiasm. (how)
  • I called for help. (why)

Identifying the Function

Ask yourself: what is the phrase describing?

| Sentence | Phrase | Describes | Function | | ------------------------------------ | ------------ | ------------ | --------- | | The man in the suit is my boss. | in the suit | man (noun) | Adjective | | She sat in the suit. | in the suit | sat (verb) | Adverb | | The road to the beach is closed. | to the beach | road (noun) | Adjective | | We drove to the beach. | to the beach | drove (verb) | Adverb |

Multiple Prepositional Phrases

Sentences can contain multiple prepositional phrases with different functions.

  • In the morning, the students in the library studied for hours.
  • In the morning → adverb (when)
  • in the library → adjective (which students)
  • for hours → adverb (how long)

Position Matters

Adjective phrases must follow the noun immediately. Adverb phrases are more flexible.

  • Adjective: I saw a bird with blue feathers. (must follow "bird")
  • Adverb: With great care, she opened the package. (can move)

Common Mistakes

  • Incorrect: The in the garden flowers are beautiful.
  • Correct: The flowers in the garden are beautiful.

The prepositional phrase must follow the noun it describes, not come before it.
